I SAW YOUR GHOST TONIGHT BY JUSTIN LEES

I SAW YOUR GHOST TONIGHT OPENING RECEPTION

Friday night saw the opening of one of the most anticipated solo exhibitions of 2023 by artist Justin Lees

I Saw Your Ghost Tonight by artist Justin Lees, is a poignant tribute to his late father, Max Lees, a respected horse trainer from Newcastle who passed away 26th August 2003. Through a diverse range of artistic mediums, Justin delves into the ethereal realm of memory, inviting viewers to embark on a contemplative journey that celebrates the enduring presence of his beloved father.

Within this collection, Justin explores the intersections of grief, love, and the power of memory. Through his mixed media painting, he strives to capture the intangible essence of his father’s spirit, infusing each artwork with a palpable sense of nostalgia, longing, and profound admiration.

The title, I Saw Your Ghost Tonight, serves as a poetic representation of the fleeting encounters with the departed and the haunting presence that lingers within one’s thoughts. It evokes the moments when Justin senses the ethereal presence of his father, as if he were a spectral figure, whispering fragments of wisdom and love.

Through visual storytelling, Justin brings to life the dynamic nature of his father’s world as a horse trainer in Newcastle. Vibrant brushstrokes, evocative imagery, and symbolic elements breathe life into the captivating realm of thoroughbred racing—the majestic equine forms, the raw energy of the track, and the gritty beauty of the stables. These elements serve as visual metaphors, symbolising the enduring passion and unwavering dedication that defined Max Lees’ existence.

I Saw Your Ghost Tonight invites viewers to engage with the artwork on a deeply personal and emotional level. The textures, colors, and symbolism woven into each piece encourage introspection and evoke dormant emotions. It is through this intimate connection that Justin hopes to foster a shared experience, prompting contemplation on the universal themes of love, loss, and the indomitable spirit of those who leave an indelible mark on our lives.

Through this exhibition, Justin pays tribute not only to his father, Max Lees, but also creates a space of solace and reflection for all who encounter it. I Saw Your Ghost Tonight serves as a reminder that memories and legacies endure, forever haunting the corners of our hearts, even in the face of loss.

Justin Lees invites you to embrace the ephemeral nature of existence, to honour the presence of those who have departed, and to celebrate the profound connections that transcend time and space.
